Poetry Friday--KK's Faves

Since it is Children's Book Week, I thought I'd tell you about five of my favorite books of poetry for children, and the reasons why I like them.

Graham, Joan Bransfield. Flicker Flash. [JP GRA]
Masterfully simple, colorful shape poems that celebrate light. A neat package.

Knock at a Star: A Child's Introduction to Poetry. [J 811.008 KNO]
Compiled by X.J. Kennedy, this is the BEST introductory poetry book for kids (and adults, too!)

Little, Jean. Hey World, Here I Am! [J 811 LIT]
This combination of prose and poetry truly captures the thoughts and feeling of a child.

Stevenson, James. Corn-Fed. (Or any of his "Corn" books!) [811 STE]
Thought provoking, highly visual, and fun!

"Lifeguard Stand, February" © James Stevenson (Greenwillow Books, 2002)

Wind in the Long Grass: A Collection of Haiku. [J 808]
Edited by the late William J. Higginson, an expert on English language haiku, this is one of the few books of haiku for children that showcases poems not written in three lines of 5-7-5 syllables.
The Poetry Friday Round-Up for this book celebratory week is being hosted by Terrie at Scrub-A-Dub-Tub.

Hey World, Here I Am! is a favorite of mine as well. I agree that it really captures the mindset of children.
